The Gold Coast is famous for its beaches. But 30 minutes inland, the Tamborine Mountain hinterland offers some of the most rewarding driving roads in South East Queensland. Tight switchbacks, rainforest canopy, and views that stretch all the way to the Pacific -- it's a supercar playground.
This is our guide to the perfect Gold Coast supercar day trip, from Surfers Paradise to the summit and back.
Why This Route
The Gold Coast to Tamborine Mountain loop is roughly 90 km and can be driven in under 2 hours. But the variety of road surfaces, elevation changes and scenery make it feel like a European mountain pass. You get coastal cruising, suburban sweepers, tight mountain switchbacks and long hinterland straights -- all in one drive.
The Coastal Start
Start from Surfers Paradise and head south along the Gold Coast Highway. The early morning light on Broadbeach and Miami is beautiful, and the wide, smooth roads let you settle into the car. Stop at Burleigh Heads for a coffee at The Commune -- the headland views are spectacular.
Velo Insider Tip
Start before 7:30 am. The Gold Coast Highway is quiet early, and you'll reach the mountain roads before the tourist traffic arrives. Plus, the morning light through the rainforest canopy is extraordinary.
Climbing Tamborine Mountain
From Nerang, take the Tamborine-Oxenford Road up the mountain. The road climbs steeply through subtropical rainforest, with hairpin bends that reward smooth driving. In a mid-engine supercar like the Ferrari 488 or McLaren 720S, this section is pure driving joy -- the weight distribution makes the switchbacks feel effortless.
As you climb, the temperature drops noticeably and the air fills with the scent of eucalyptus and rainforest. Roll the windows down and savour it.
Gallery Walk & Lunch
At the summit, head to Gallery Walk -- Tamborine Mountain's charming main street lined with boutique shops, art galleries and cafes. Park your supercar on the main street (there's ample parking) and explore on foot.
For lunch, Witches Falls Winery offers excellent local wines and a restaurant with valley views. Or try Polish Place for something unique -- European cuisine with panoramic views of the Gold Coast skyline below.
The Scenic Descent
Instead of retracing your route, take the western descent via Tamborine Mountain Road to Canungra. This road is wider, smoother and offers sweeping views of the Scenic Rim. From Canungra, loop back to the Gold Coast via Beaudesert Road -- a fast, flowing road that lets you stretch the car's legs.
Velo Insider Tip
The descent from Tamborine via the western route has a 60 km/h speed limit in sections. Respect it -- the road is shared with cyclists and horse riders, and the views are worth going slowly for.
Best Cars for the Trip
The mountain switchbacks favour mid-engine supercars with precise steering and sharp turn-in. Our top picks:

Recommended
Ferrari 488 Spider
Mid-engine precision meets hinterland twisties. Roof down, windows down.
Check availabilityThe McLaren 720S is equally brilliant here -- the carbon fibre tub and hydraulic suspension make the mountain roads genuinely exciting.
