There are few drives in Australia that combine coastal scenery, rainforest canopy and hinterland charm quite like the Noosa to Maleny loop on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Drop the roof, turn up the soundtrack and let the road do the talking.
We've driven this route dozens of times in everything from a Range Rover Autobiography to a Ferrari 488 Spider. Here's our definitive insider guide to making the most of it.
The Route Overview
The full loop is roughly 120 km and takes about 2.5 hours of pure driving -- though we recommend a full day so you can stop, eat and soak it in. You'll head south from Noosa along the coast, cut inland through Eumundi, climb into the Blackall Range via Mapleton, then cruise into Maleny before looping back.
Starting in Noosa Heads
Pick up your car from our Eagle Farm showroom the day before and enjoy the Sunshine Coast cruise north. Park at Hastings Street for a coffee at Bistro C, then set off south on David Low Way. The first stretch hugs the coastline -- roof down, ocean breeze, zero stress.
Velo Insider Tip
Leave Noosa before 8:30 am on weekends. David Low Way gets busy by mid-morning, and you want clear roads for the coastal section.
Eumundi Pit Stop
Eumundi is famous for its Wednesday and Saturday markets, but even on off-days the town has excellent cafes and boutique shops. Spirit House restaurant nearby is a Queensland institution -- worth booking lunch on the way back.
From Eumundi, take the Eumundi-Kenilworth Road west. The road narrows and the scenery shifts from coastal to lush subtropical rainforest. This is where a convertible truly shines -- you can smell the eucalyptus.
Maleny & the Hinterland
Climbing the Blackall Range through Mapleton and Montville, you'll find sweeping views over the Glass House Mountains. Stop at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve for the lookout -- it's one of the best panoramas in South East Queensland.
Maleny itself is a charming hinterland town with excellent dining. We recommend The Terrace Seafood Restaurant for a late lunch with mountain views.
Velo Insider Tip
The Maleny-Montville road has tight switchbacks. The Ferrari 488 Spider handles them beautifully, but take it steady -- there's no rush, and the views are worth slowing down for.
Best Car for the Drive
For this route, nothing beats a convertible supercar. The open top lets you fully immerse in the scenery, while the performance makes the hinterland twisties genuinely thrilling.
